Climate, site & wine
North of Heidelberg vines grow on granite, porphyry and loess; from Leimen Buntsandstein gives way to Muschelkalk. Spätburgunder from granite and porphyry is finer, aromatic and soft-tannined, on Muschelkalk intense and dense.
Riesling and Weissburgunder complete the range; the wines are mostly medium-bodied with clear fruit. With under 400 hectares of vines, the Bergstraße is a small area.

A strip about 30 kilometres long on the Odenwald edge from Laudenbach in the north to Wiesloch south of Heidelberg, with villages such as Weinheim, Schriesheim and Leimen. The hills rise to about 400 metres.
