TERROIR PROFILE

Rheinhessen-Mitte

Classical loess Rheinhessen

Rheinhessen-Mitte is the loess heartland — fruity Rieslings and honest Silvaner.

Climate, site & wine

Deep loess and loamy loess store water and give the wines fullness; where limestone or marl lies near the surface, they gain tension. Riesling, Silvaner and Müller-Thurgau stand mainly on the loess areas.

The stylistic range is accordingly broad: from light, fresh whites to powerful dry single-site wines, complemented by Spätburgunder. With more than 150 wine villages the number of estates and sites is large.

SOILS

Loessround, fruity, full

Loess stores water and nutrients. Wines tend to be rounder, juicier and fuller.

Loambody-rich, velvety

Loamy soils give wines volume and a soft, velvety mouthfeel.

Limestoneprecise, mineral

Limestone delivers tension, structure and a cooler, more mineral character.

Marlbalanced, structured

Marl is a mix of limestone and clay — yields structured, balanced wines with acidity backbone.

CLIMATE · Warm · Dry · Sunny

Mild continental and dry: Rheinhessen lies in the rain shadow of the Hunsrück, Taunus and Palatinate Forest and is among the drier, sunnier wine regions of Germany. The Rhine tempers winter and autumn.

TOPOGRAPHY · gentle

Extensive rolling hills between Mainz and Alzey with gentle crests, broad valley floors and mostly moderate slopes. Limestone ridges rise from the loess cover in places; marked steep sites are rare.
