Climate, site & wine
Ice-age ground moraine, near Hagnau with a strip of Tertiary Molasse by the shore, loam and gravel form the soils. Müller-Thurgau yields fresh, light whites with marked acidity here, while Weissburgunder and Grauburgunder become refined.
Spätburgunder, also as Weissherbst, is the main red variety; the wines are lean and fresh. The lake climate and late harvest preserve the acidity that characterises these wines.

Loamy soils give wines volume and a soft, velvety mouthfeel.

Gravel and sand drain heavily — vines struggle for water, wines turn fine, light and elegant.
Marlbalanced, structured
Marl is a mix of limestone and clay — yields structured, balanced wines with acidity backbone.
Sandstonewarm, dry, spicy
Sandstone warms quickly and yields ripe, fragrant wines with yellow fruit and fine spice.
CLIMATE · Cool continental
Cool and temperate with lake influence: Lake Constance stores heat in summer and releases it slowly in autumn and winter; only this makes viticulture possible at 400 to 530 metres. Nights stay cool.
TOPOGRAPHY · moderate
Gently hilly, glacier-shaped north shore with sites at about 400 to 530 metres, mostly sloping south to the lake, for example near Meersburg and Hagnau. At the Hohentwiel near Singen, vines stand on volcanic rock.
