Northernmost Riesling on the Rhine
Siebengebirge: light, fresh Rieslings from the northernmost edge of Rhine viticulture.
Climate, site & wine
In the north volcanic soils of tuff and pumice dominate, alongside slate, greywacke and loess islands. Riesling here is slender and fresh in acidity.
The Siebengebirge is volcanic in origin and formed in the Oligocene; the Rhine valley's northernmost Riesling grows there. Only about 20 hectares grow on North Rhine-Westphalian territory; Leutesdorf and Hammerstein form the northern focal point of the Middle Rhine.

Slate stores heat and releases it at night — wines show wet stone, smoke and a delicate structure.
Volcanic rocksmoky, mineral, powerful
Volcanic soils yield smoky, often iodine-mineral wines with dense structure.

Loess stores water and nutrients. Wines tend to be rounder, juicier and fuller.
CLIMATE · Cool continental
In the northern Middle Rhine the Eifel, Westerwald and Siebengebirge shield the vines from cold fronts and heavy rain. The vineyard plots are small and lie scattered like islands in the Rhine valley.
TOPOGRAPHY · mixed
Small steep sites near Leutesdorf, Hammerstein and Unkel and on the Siebengebirge near Königswinter and Rhöndorf; the wine region ends shortly before Bonn.
