Climate, site & wine
In the best sites, granite, gneiss or Buntsandstein lie beneath the humus, in the middle Ortenau also calcareous marl, plus loess. In Durbach the first single-variety Riesling planting in Baden was laid out in 1782; Riesling is called Klingelberger there and is spicy and fine.
Spätburgunder is fragrant and fine-boned. Spätburgunder is the second defining variety of the Ortenau alongside Riesling; steep terraces demand much manual work.

SOILS
Graniteelegant, lightly spicy
Weathered granite produces elegant, slender wines with fine, lightly spicy profile.
Sandstonewarm, dry, spicy
Sandstone warms quickly and yields ripe, fragrant wines with yellow fruit and fine spice.
Loessround, fruity, full
Loess stores water and nutrients. Wines tend to be rounder, juicier and fuller.
Marlbalanced, structured
Marl is a mix of limestone and clay — yields structured, balanced wines with acidity backbone.
CLIMATE · Warm · Dry · Sunny
Mild and sunny in the foothill zone of the Black Forest, but wetter than the Rhine plain (up to about 1,100 mm). By day sun and Rhine air warm the sites, at night downslope winds from the Black Forest cool the vine rows.
TOPOGRAPHY · steep
Steep, often terraced slopes on the western edge of the Black Forest between Baden-Baden and Offenburg; steep sites make up about 60 per cent of the vineyard area. Wine villages include Durbach, Neuweier and Oberkirch.
