Climate, site & wine

Deep soils, including cambic chernozems, store water and produce balanced, not overly heavy whites. Continental coolness preserves acidity and favours fruit over power.

Fetească Albă, the most popular white variety of the podgorie, and Fetească Regală give dry to off-dry wines with apple and blossom aromas. Busuioacă de Bohotin is a red-skinned aromatic variety that yields fragrant, often off-dry rosé and white wines with rose and muscat notes; Aligoté adds slender acidity.

Continental climate with cold winters and warm summers. The vineyards lie at the transition from the Moldavian Plain to the Central Moldavian Plateau; ripening takes place in September and October.

Gentle hills at the transition between the Moldavian Plain (around 150 m) and the plateau (up to about 300–350 m at the Coasta Iașului) with the wine centres Copou, Bucium, Galata, Tomești and Bohotin. Vineyards occupy moderately sloping hillsides above the Bahlui valley.
