Wine Character
Viticulture in Iași extends over the hills around the city in north-eastern Romania, on the Moldavian Plateau. The wine villages and hills include Copou, Bucium, Galata and Tomești; to the south lies Bohotin, the centre of Busuioacă de Bohotin. The hills rise above the Bahlui valley in which the city lies, and the vineyards face mostly south and south-east.
The climate is continental, with cold winters and warm summers; spring frosts and winter cold are a risk for the vines. The soils consist mainly of loess and clay on the slopes, which retain water well.
Characteristic is Busuioacă de Bohotin, a pink aromatic variety from which off-dry and sweet rosé and red wines are made. The main white varieties are Fetească Albă and Fetească Regală, along with Aligoté; among the reds Merlot and Fetească Neagră play a role. The whites are mostly light, fresh and fruity. Viticulture around Iași is rich in tradition but is today mostly small-scale.
