Climate, site & wine
Weathered Muschelkalk, along with Buntsandstein and loess loam, gives the wines freshness and minerality. The dry-stone walls store heat for ripening.
Müller-Thurgau and Silvaner are light and spicy, while Weißburgunder and Riesling bring more structure and a chalky edge. At roughly 800 hectares, Saale-Unstrut is Germany's northernmost quality wine region; phylloxera nearly destroyed viticulture there in 1887.

Saale-Unstrut, with around 500 mm of rain and about 1,600 hours of sunshine a year, is one of Germany's drier wine regions. The river valley forms warm pockets, and viticulture sits at the northern limit of quality wine growing.
