Climate, site & wine
Buntsandstein, Rotliegend, calcareous marl, Muschelkalk and loess alternate over short distances. Sites such as Birkweiler Kastanienbusch on Rotliegend and Buntsandstein yield spicy, mineral Riesling and Spätburgunder, while loess and loam give fuller Weissburgunder and Chardonnay.
The Burgundian varieties are the regional focus. Typical are ripe, dry wines with a soft body, complemented by Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc.

Sandstone warms quickly and yields ripe, fragrant wines with yellow fruit and fine spice.

Loess stores water and nutrients. Wines tend to be rounder, juicier and fuller.
Loambody-rich, velvety
Loamy soils give wines volume and a soft, velvety mouthfeel.
CLIMATE · Warm · Dry · Sunny
Warm and dry in the lee of the Palatinate Forest, with a mild spring and long autumn. Towards the south the climate becomes more Alsatian; almond and sweet chestnut trees grow on the slopes.
TOPOGRAPHY · gentle
Gentle slopes and broad valleys along the eastern edge of the Palatinate Forest, from the margin of the Rhine plain up into the foothills. In side valleys, for example near Birkweiler and Siebeldingen, sites become narrower and steeper.
