TERROIR PROFILE

Terrassenmosel

Europe's steepest terraces

Terrassenmosel — Heymann-Löwenstein's home, uncompromising steep-slope culture in Winningen.

Climate, site & wine

Devonian slate and greywacke form the backbone of the Terrassenmosel; at the Calmont, quartzite and sandstone are added. The dark rock warms quickly and releases the heat, while the Mosel reflects extra light and dampens frost. Riesling covers almost 60 percent of the vineyard area; it ripens slowly and keeps its acidity.

The Rieslings show a taut, saline and mineral structure with citrus, stone fruit and smoky notes, and they age well. Spätburgunder and other varieties play a supporting role.

SOILS

Slatemineral, smoky

Slate stores heat and releases it at night — wines show wet stone, smoke and a delicate structure.

CLIMATE · Cool continental

Cool-continental climate in the narrow, sheltered Mosel valley. The river and the slate rock store heat and release it at night, so ripening runs well into October. Spring frost is a risk on the valley floor, while the slopes themselves are generally safer.

TOPOGRAPHY · terraced

Very steep slopes, reaching about 68 degrees at the Bremmer Calmont, between Pünderich and Koblenz, often laid out as narrow terraces with dry-stone walls. The best sites face south and southwest and drop straight to the river; vineyard work and harvest are largely done by hand.
