Mittelmosel is the spiritual home of German Riesling — Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Bernkasteler Doctor, J.J. Prüm.
Climate, site & wine
Blue and grey Devonian slate absorbs warmth by day and releases it by night. An exception is the Ürziger Würzgarten, whose red slate and volcanic rock gives Riesling a spicy, exotic note. Fruit and high acidity combine with stony minerality.
Typical are light, dancing wines with peach, apple and citrus notes, from dry Kabinett to noble-sweet Auslese. The steep sites can mostly only be worked by hand.

Slate stores heat and releases it at night — wines show wet stone, smoke and a delicate structure.
CLIMATE · Cool continental
Cool with continental influence: the river in its loops stores warmth, the Eifel and Hunsrück give wind shelter, and the steep south-facing sites catch the light. Riesling ripens fully without losing freshness; harvest often runs far into autumn.
TOPOGRAPHY · steep
Steep slate slopes along the Mosel loops between Trier and Zell; sites such as Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Bernkasteler Doctor and Erdener Treppchen are in part steeper than 60 per cent. The best sites face south to southwest.
