Diosig lies in Bihor County in the far north-west of Romania, directly on the Hungarian border. Besides Diosig, the podgorie includes Oradea and Marghita north of the Crișul Repede river. The landscape is flat to gently rolling and belongs to the Pannonian Plain, which reaches into Romania here.
The climate is temperate continental, with warm summers and cold winters. The vines stand on sand and loam soils that warm up quickly in spring and favour light, fresh wines. On sandier sites the wines stay slender, on loamier ones they gain body.
White wines from Fetească Regală and Fetească Albă come first, along with Riesling Italico and Pinot Gris. A particular feature is Furmint, which has a long tradition here as in the neighbouring Hungarian Tokaj area. The wines are mostly dry or off-dry and meant for early drinking.
