Istria-Babadag lies in eastern Romania in Dobruja, in Tulcea and Constanța counties, on the edge of the Danube Delta. The origin covers Babadag, Valea Nucarilor and Istria. The name Istria goes back to the ancient Greek colony of Histria, founded on the Black Sea coast by settlers from Miletus in the 7th century BC.
The climate is dry and steppe-like, with hot summers, cold winters and a tempering sea breeze from the nearby Black Sea and the lagoons. Rainfall is low. The soils are loess and limestone and store little water, which limits yields.
Fetească Regală, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay are grown for white wine, and Merlot, Fetească Neagră and Cabernet Sauvignon for red. The region's estates are mostly young and quality-oriented. The whites show freshness, the reds warmth and ripeness.
