Wine Character
The Ruwer, at about 200 hectares, is the smallest of the three Mosel sub-regions – a tributary just 17 km long that joins the Mosel at Trier-Eitelsbach. Despite its small size, the Ruwer is home to two world-class estates: Maximin Grünhaus (Schubert family since 1882, with the monopole sites Abtsberg, Herrenberg and Bruderberg) and Karthäuserhof in Eitelsbach (founded 1335 as a Carthusian monastery, today Tyrell family). Both rank among Germany's most uncompromising Riesling producers – with minimal yields, old vines and consistently mineral style. Ruwer Rieslings are often slightly lighter and more nervous than Mittelmosel ones, marked by cool microclimate and particularly stony slate soils.
