Very cool in a narrow, wind-sheltered side valley of the Mosel. Nearby forest and cool air currents from the heights lower temperatures; ripening is late and high acidity is retained.

Narrow, winding valley of the Ruwer near Trier, with viticulture around Eitelsbach, Kasel, Waldrach and Mertesdorf. In Mertesdorf, Maximin Grünhaus lies at the foot of a long south-facing slope where Abtsberg is up to 70 per cent steep.

Wine Character

The Ruwer, at about 200 hectares, is the smallest of the three Mosel sub-regions – a tributary just 17 km long that joins the Mosel at Trier-Eitelsbach. Despite its small size, the Ruwer is home to two world-class estates: Maximin Grünhaus (Schubert family since 1882, with the monopole sites Abtsberg, Herrenberg and Bruderberg) and Karthäuserhof in Eitelsbach (founded 1335 as a Carthusian monastery, today Tyrell family). Both rank among Germany's most uncompromising Riesling producers – with minimal yields, old vines and consistently mineral style. Ruwer Rieslings are often slightly lighter and more nervous than Mittelmosel ones, marked by cool microclimate and particularly stony slate soils.
