The Severin podgorie lies in Mehedinți County in south-western Romania, near the Danube town of Drobeta-Turnu Severin, close to the Iron Gates gorge. It includes Halânga and Corcova. The vineyards are on hills above the Danube.
The climate is warm and Mediterranean-tinged, with mild winters and long, warm summers. The soils are loam and limestone, which are well drained and store warmth.
Corcova has a notable history: Prince Anton Bibescu owned a large estate here with vineyards and had cellars built at the start of the 20th century. After decline, only a few hectares of vines remained by 2005; in 2006 and 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Muscat Ottonel and Chardonnay were newly planted. Fetească Neagră is also grown in the area. The reds are warm and ripe, the whites aromatic.
