The Mansfelder Seen district is the northernmost part of the Saale-Unstrut wine region. It lies west of Halle between Halle and Eisleben, around the Süßer See near Seeburg, with the wine villages of Höhnstedt, Seeburg and Rollsdorf. The vineyards extend along the slopes above the lake and the Salza valley; the Höhnstedter Kelterberg is a known site. Some 50 growers farm small plots, some of whom deliver to the Freyburg growers' association.
The region lies in the Central German dry area in the rain shadow of the Harz; rainfall is low, summers are warm and winters cold. The soils consist mainly of shell limestone and loess, which retains water and supplies the vines well.
Müller-Thurgau, Weißburgunder and Riesling are grown, along with the red varieties Portugieser and Dornfelder. The whites are fresh, light and fruit-driven; the reds slender and approachable. Weingut Born in Höhnstedt is the best-known estate in the area.
