Wine Character
The Bottwartal lies north of Marbach am Neckar in the Ludwigsburg district and follows the course of the Bottwar. The wine villages include Großbottwar, Steinheim an der Murr and Oberstenfeld. The valley counts as one of the larger wine-growing areas in Württemberg; about 500 hectares have been planted with vines for roughly a thousand years. The 394-metre Wunnenstein is the landmark visible from afar.
The vineyards stand mainly on Keuper rocks with loess loam. The climate is mildly continental, with slopes facing south and southwest.
Trollinger, Lemberger and Schwarzriesling are the most important red varieties; on the Wunnenstein Muskattrollinger grows alongside Riesling. Well-known sites are Harzberg, Forstberg, Wunnenstein, Lichtenberg and the Burgberg. The Bottwartaler Winzer in Großbottwar unite about 600 growers with roughly 310 hectares; in Kleinbottwar lies Weingut Graf Adelmann at Burg Schaubeck.
