SOILS

Keuper marlpowerful, iron-red

Keuper marl with high iron content gives Lemberger and Pinot Noir powerful, spicy depth.

Marlbalanced, structured

Marl is a mix of limestone and clay — yields structured, balanced wines with acidity backbone.

Sandstonewarm, dry, spicy

Sandstone warms quickly and yields ripe, fragrant wines with yellow fruit and fine spice.

Loessround, fruity, full

Loess stores water and nutrients. Wines tend to be rounder, juicier and fuller.

CLIMATE · Cool continental

Mild, slightly continental climate with warm days and cool nights; night-time cold air from the Schurwald brings freshness and aromatic range. Remstal sites benefit from a long growing season, though late frost is possible in hollows.

TOPOGRAPHY · terraced

Terraced, often steep slopes on both sides of the Rems east of Stuttgart, with villages such as Fellbach, Weinstadt and Stetten. The Stettener Pulvermächer is a south-facing terraced slope in a sheltered side valley of the Rems.

Wine Character

The Remstal is a river valley of the Rems about 78 kilometres long, east of Stuttgart. The vineyard area is about 780 hectares. On only around ten percent of Württemberg's vineyard area sit some 45 percent of the region's top estates. The wine villages range from Fellbach and Kernen near Stuttgart to the area around Schwäbisch Gmünd.

The slopes stand on Keuper, above all marl, with Schilfsandstein and loess also present. The climate is mildly continental; the south and southwest faces of the steep terraces are warm. Marl soils are regarded as the basis for powerful, structured Rieslings.

Riesling, Spätburgunder, Lemberger and Trollinger are grown, along with newer crossings such as Acolon. Well known is the Stettener Brotwasser below the Yburg, a site of a little over 3 hectares on marl owned by the Hofkammer Württemberg. Other sites include the Fellbacher Lämmler and the Stettener Pulvermächer. Aldinger and Schnaitmann in Fellbach and Beurer in Kernen-Stetten are among the known estates; the Remstalkellerei and the Fellbacher Weingärtner are the large cooperatives.
