Climate, site & wine
Gravel, sand, clay and limestone determine the soils: Barsac lies on thin limestone soils, Sauternes on gravelly, deeper soils. Sémillon predominates because of its susceptibility to noble rot, Sauvignon Blanc contributes acidity and freshness, Muscadelle aromatics. Barsac may be sold under its own name or as Sauternes.
The wines are sweet, dense and yet lively, with honey, apricot, candied orange, saffron and nut. Barsac is regarded as slimmer, Sauternes as more opulent; acidity balances the sweetness, and the wines age for decades.

Gravel and sand drain heavily — vines struggle for water, wines turn fine, light and elegant.

Limestone delivers tension, structure and a cooler, more mineral character.
Sandaromatic, approachable
Loose sand and wind-blown sand warm up quickly and hold little water — they give aromatic, early-drinking wines with soft tannins; phylloxera-resistant.
Loambody-rich, velvety
Loamy soils give wines volume and a soft, velvety mouthfeel.
CLIMATE · Maritime
Oceanic climate with a distinctive autumn rhythm: the cool Ciron meets the warmer Garonne and produces morning mist that encourages Botrytis cinerea. Dry, warm afternoons dry out the berries and concentrate them. Wet autumns can ruin a harvest.
TOPOGRAPHY · gentle
Gently rolling hills between the Ciron and the Garonne south of Bordeaux; Barsac is flatter and chalkier, Sauternes more gravelly and more undulating. The Château d'Yquem estate lies on the appellation's highest point.
