Barbaresco is Nebbiolo in silk — Barolo's elegant sister.
Climate, site & wine
Tortonian marl with a higher lime content dominates and shapes a finer tannin structure. The milder climate near the Tanaro ripens Nebbiolo somewhat earlier without losing acidity.
The wines are pale and perfumed, with rose, violet, red berries and spice; tannins are finer and become approachable earlier than in Barolo, yet the structure remains taut. The overall impression is elegant and fine, with good ageing potential.

CLIMATE · Cool continental
Continental climate with cool nights and foggy autumns. The proximity of the Tanaro has a slight moderating effect; the zone lies about 50 metres lower than Barolo, and Nebbiolo usually ripens somewhat earlier. Harvest takes place in October.
TOPOGRAPHY · moderate
Lower, gentler hills than in Barolo, roughly between 200 and 400 metres, on the right bank of the Tanaro. The communes of Barbaresco, Neive and Treiso form three distinguishable sub-zones.
