Gutedel heartland in the deep south
Markgräflerland is Germany's Gutedel country — one of the oldest cultivated grape varieties.
Climate, site & wine
Clay, loess and occasionally limestone define the soils; at the Isteiner Klotz rare Jurassic limestone appears, otherwise hardly found in Germany. Gutedel, the signature grape of the region, becomes light, delicate wines with mild acidity here.
Weissburgunder and Spätburgunder gain weight in the warmth and show soft, fruity profiles. The vineyard area is a good 3,000 hectares; Gutedel remains the signature variety.

Loess stores water and nutrients. Wines tend to be rounder, juicier and fuller.

CLIMATE · Warm · Dry · Sunny
Warm and sunny: through the Burgundian Gate warm air from the Rhône valley reaches the southern edge of the Black Forest. The region is among the warmest in Germany, with rainfall of around 800 mm a year.
TOPOGRAPHY · gentle
Gentle hills and foothill zone between Freiburg and Basel. On the Rhine the Isteiner Klotz of Jurassic limestone rises up; Müllheim, Auggen and Schliengen lie at the foot of the slopes.
