Kraichgau

Kraichgau — Burg Ravensburg, Heitlinger, Klumpp. Muschelkalk Riesling on rolling hills.
Climate, site & wine
The soils consist of Keuper, Muschelkalk and Buntsandstein, covered by loess, which reaches up to 30 metres in the Kraichgau, exceptionally thick for Germany. On loess, Riesling becomes powerful and round, on Muschelkalk tauter and spicier.
Spätburgunder and Schwarzriesling are the main reds. With around 1,250 hectares of vines, mostly on the Keuper heights, the Kraichgau is a mid-sized Baden wine area.

Loess stores water and nutrients. Wines tend to be rounder, juicier and fuller.

Keuper marl with high iron content gives Lemberger and Pinot Noir powerful, spicy depth.

Muschelkalk yields a crisp mineral acidity and salty depth.

Loamy soils give wines volume and a soft, velvety mouthfeel.
CLIMATE · Cool continental
Mild, sheltered basin position between the Odenwald and the Black Forest, with an annual mean above 9 °C one of the warmer regions of Germany. Rainfall is around 720 to 830 mm.
TOPOGRAPHY · moderate
Rolling hill country between the Rhine and Neckar. The wine area extends between Bruchsal and Wiesloch; most vines stand on the Keuper heights around Sinsheim and Sulzfeld.
