Climate, site & wine
Morainic gravel over granite forms the soil in Carema. Nebbiolo ripens late and stays pale, perfumed and acid-driven; mechanisation is impossible.
In the Canavese around Caluso Erbaluce thrives and yields dry wines, spumante and passito. The moraine hills stem from Ice Age glaciers. The Carema appellation dates from 1967; the pergolas serve to maximise sun on the steep slope and to regulate heat through the stone pillars.

CLIMATE · Alpine
Carema lies at the border with the Aosta Valley, on the west side of the Dora Baltea valley. Stone pillars and walls absorb heat by day and release it at night.
TOPOGRAPHY · terraced
Terraces with dry-stone walls rise from about 300 to over 600 metres in a natural amphitheatre; the vines are trained on pergolas held by stone pillars (topie).
