Panciu, Țifești and Păunești on the foothills of the Carpathian bend: Romania's sparkling-wine stronghold with underground cellar galleries and fresh whites.
Climate, site & wine
The soils have formed mostly on loess deposits (chernozem and grey forest soils, generally loamy to sandy-loam) over piedmont sands and gravels. This gives good drainage and rapid warming; the result is fresh, balanced whites and more substantial reds.
Fetească Regală, Fetească Albă, Riesling Italico and Plăvaie give dry to off-dry whites, Fetească Neagră, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon structured reds with dark fruit.

Gravel and sand drain heavily — vines struggle for water, wines turn fine, light and elegant.

Loess stores water and nutrients. Wines tend to be rounder, juicier and fuller.

Loose sand and wind-blown sand warm up quickly and hold little water — they give aromatic, early-drinking wines with soft tannins; phylloxera-resistant.
CLIMATE · Cool continental
Continental climate on the foothills of the Carpathian bend with warm summers and cold winters; harvest takes place in September. Sites on terraces and slopes are sun-exposed, mostly inclined towards east to south-east.

Terraces and slopes on the outer edge of the Carpathian bend around Panciu, Țifești and Păunești in northern Vrancea. Vineyards occupy hills and terraces at the foot of the mountains.
