Stuttgart is one of the few major cities with vineyards in the urban core.
Climate, site & wine
The sites stand mostly on Keuper; only in the northeast (Bad Cannstatt, Mühlhausen) does Muschelkalk dominate. Because of the steepness, the weathering layer of marl and sandy to clayey loam is thin, and vines must drive their roots into the rock. The Mönchberg consists of gypsum Keuper with marl and stones.
On these soils Lemberger and Trollinger grow robust, Riesling taut and spicy.

Keuper marl with high iron content gives Lemberger and Pinot Noir powerful, spicy depth.

Marl is a mix of limestone and clay — yields structured, balanced wines with acidity backbone.

Muschelkalk yields a crisp mineral acidity and salty depth.
Loambody-rich, velvety
Loamy soils give wines volume and a soft, velvety mouthfeel.
CLIMATE · Cool continental
Mild continental in the Stuttgart basin. Because of its position in the rain shadow of the northern Black Forest, Stuttgart has high solar radiation; at 230 to 240 days the growing season is the longest in all of Württemberg.
TOPOGRAPHY · steep
Steep, partly terraced slopes within the city, above all in Untertürkheim, Cannstatt and Uhlbach. Known sites are Mönchhalde, Herzogenberg, Mönchberg and Schlossberg in Untertürkheim, the Uhlbacher Götzenberg and the Cannstatter Zuckerle.
