Climate, site & wine
Young, deep alluvial soils with good moisture retention define the valley, from deep red loams by the Swan River to grey sand over clay on the flats. Heat makes the grapes ripen quickly and acidity drops fast.
Chenin Blanc and Verdelho are regarded as the best varieties and give full, fruit-driven whites; Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are soft and warm. The Swan Valley is Western Australia's oldest wine region (first vines soon after 1829) and has a tradition of liqueur-style wines from Muscat, Verdelho and Pedro Ximénez.

Loambody-rich, velvety
Loamy soils give wines volume and a soft, velvety mouthfeel.
Sandaromatic, approachable
Loose sand and wind-blown sand warm up quickly and hold little water — they give aromatic, early-drinking wines with soft tannins; phylloxera-resistant.
Gravel / Sandlight, approachable
Gravel and sand drain heavily — vines struggle for water, wines turn fine, light and elegant.
CLIMATE · Mediterranean
Hot Mediterranean-continental climate: long, dry summers with high temperatures and mild, wetter winters. Ripening is early and brief, with harvest often starting in January.
TOPOGRAPHY · gentle
Flat valley on the Swan River northeast of Perth, at the foot of the Darling Scarp. Vineyards lie on the level coastal plain and the fringes of the scarp; slopes play hardly any role.
