Climate, site & wine

Almost all sites stand on Middle and Lower Muschelkalk, calcareous, slightly clayey loams that warm up easily and hold heat well; in places Buntsandstein forms the subsoil. Müller-Thurgau and Silvaner become spicy and firm.

Tauberschwarz remains a rarity. Typical are fresh, mineral whites, some in the Bocksbeutel, and light reds. The vineyard area is around 700 hectares, spread over small plots along the valley edge.

CLIMATE · Cool continental

Continental with hot, dry summers and cold winters, with rainfall of around 600 to 650 mm. Winter and spring frost is a considerably higher risk than in other Baden regions.

TOPOGRAPHY · moderate

The Tauber valley from Bad Mergentheim via Tauberbischofsheim to Wertheim on the Main, cut into the Muschelkalk plateau. Vineyards lie on the valley slopes, with villages such as Lauda-Königshofen and Külsheim.
