CLIMATE · Cool continental

Continental with hot, dry summers and cold winters, with rainfall of around 600 to 650 mm. Winter and spring frost is a considerably higher risk than in other Baden regions.

The Tauber valley from Bad Mergentheim via Tauberbischofsheim to Wertheim on the Main, cut into the Muschelkalk plateau. Vineyards lie on the valley slopes, with villages such as Lauda-Königshofen and Külsheim.

Terroir & Climate

Wine Character

Tauberfranken is the northeastern part of Baden, following the Tauber valley in the Main-Tauber district and bordering Franconia and Württemberg. The larger towns are Wertheim, Tauberbischofsheim, Lauda-Königshofen and Bad Mergentheim; Beckstein belongs to Lauda-Königshofen and Reicholzheim to Wertheim. The Romantic Road and the Taubertal cycle route run through the region.

The slopes of the Tauber valley consist mainly of Muschelkalk, with Keuper and locally Buntsandstein also present. The climate is continental, cooler than on the Upper Rhine, with a risk of late frost in the valley floors. The wines tend to be higher in acidity and light.

Müller-Thurgau, Schwarzriesling, Bacchus and Tauberschwarz are grown, the last an old red variety widespread in the Tauber valley. The region is one of the few wine areas outside Bavaria allowed to bottle its wines in the Bocksbeutel, a tradition it shares with Franconia.
