Gentle hills and side valleys on both sides of the Serein east of Auxerre. The grand cru sites form a continuous southwest-facing slope on the right bank; Premier Cru and Chablis sites are spread over both sides of the valley.

Chablis is the northernmost Burgundy appellation, about 130 km southeast of Paris in the Yonne département. The region grows exclusively Chardonnay on the famous Kimmeridgian limestone – a fossilized seabed from the Jurassic era studded with oyster fossils. This geology gives Chablis wines their distinctive salty-mineral character and fine acidity.
The hierarchy has four tiers: Petit Chablis, Chablis (Village), Chablis Premier Cru (40 climats), and Chablis Grand Cru (7 climats: Les Clos, Vaudésir, Valmur, Grenouilles, Bougros, Preuses, Blanchot). Top estates like Raveneau, Dauvissat, William Fèvre and Vincent Dauvissat rank among the world's most sought-after white wine producers.
