Sarica-Niculițel lies in northern Dobruja in Tulcea County, at the edge of the Măcin Mountains and near the Danube at the Danube bend. The area includes Niculițel, Tulcea, Măcin and Dăeni, as well as Hârșova on the Danube. The Măcin Mountains are among the oldest landmasses in Romania; the Sarica-Niculițel podgorie is regarded as the oldest vineyard area of Dobruja, where vines have been grown since antiquity.
The soils derive from the weathering of granite and other crystalline rocks, with loess in addition. The climate is dry continental with hot summers and cold winters; rainfall is low, and the Danube and the Black Sea have a tempering effect nearby.
Fetească Regală, Fetească Albă, Aligoté and Sauvignon Blanc are grown, along with the red varieties Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Fetească Neagră. The whites are fresh and fruity, the reds powerful and spicy. The Alira winery and Crama Sarica are among the well-known estates.
