Wine Character
The Dealurile Craiovei form the hill zone around the city of Craiova in Dolj County in south-western Romania. The podgorie includes Banu Mărăcine, Brădești and Brabova near Craiova as well as Segarcea further south, where the wine landscape runs out towards the Danube plain. Segarcea is the best-known centre: the Royal Domain (Domeniul Coroanei Segarcea) was founded there in 1884.
The climate is temperate continental and warm, with hot summers and a fairly long growing season. The vineyards stand on loam and loess soils that are well aerated and absorb warmth. This allows late-ripening red varieties to ripen reliably.
Fetească Regală, Sauvignon Blanc and Tămâioasă Românească are grown for white wine, and Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Fetească Neagră for red. Besides the estate, Segarcea also has a viticulture research station. The wines range from fresh whites to full-bodied, oak-aged reds.
