Huși lies in Vaslui County in eastern Romania, in the hills on the Prut river, which here forms the border with the Republic of Moldova. Besides Huși, the podgorie includes Averești and Crasna. Viticulture is old here: the podgorie is documented as early as 1415, and the chronicler Dimitrie Cantemir ranked the wine of Huși second only to Cotnari in his description of Moldavia.
The climate is continental and dry, with hot summers and cold winters. The soils are loess and sandy loam, which warm easily. The hill setting helps with ventilation of the vines.
The local speciality is Zghihară de Huși, a variety produced only here, which yields dry, light wines with crisp acidity that are drunk young. Fetească Albă, Fetească Regală and Busuioacă de Bohotin are also grown, along with Merlot and Fetească Neagră for red. A diocese was founded in Huși in 1598, and the town has had Romania's first viticulture museum since 1966.
