The Thuringian part of the Saale-Unstrut wine region centres on the spa town of Bad Sulza in the Ilm valley, north of Jena. Vines grow on the slopes of the river valleys, along the Saale towards Jena and around Dornburg. Kaatschen near Großheringen, at the meeting of the Ilm and the Saale, is the region's southernmost wine village. Well-known sites include the Bad Sulzaer Sonnenberg and the Auerstedter Tamsel.
The vineyards lie on shell limestone and Buntsandstein (red sandstone), together with Keuper and loess loam. The climate is continental and sunny by German standards, but this is a northern wine area in which late frosts and cold winters shape viticulture.
Müller-Thurgau, Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Riesling and Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris) dominate, with Dornfelder as the red variety. The wines are mostly dry and fresh. Thüringer Weingut Bad Sulza, founded in 1992, is regarded as Thuringia's first winery and is among the largest private estates of the region; Thüringer Weingut Zahn in Kaatschen also farms sites on the Saale.
