TERROIR PROFILE

Silagiu

Silagiu – Warm temperate

Silagiu near Buziaș: hillside vineyards of Banat with a Cadarcă tradition, small family estates.

Climate, site & wine

Reddish-brown forest soils, in places rich in iron oxide, over a calcareous bedrock shape the hills; the wines are medium-bodied with moderate acidity.

The Buziaș-Silagiu podgorie is one of the wine centres of the Banat. Between about 1840 and 1850 Hungarian and German winegrowers settled here, and after the phylloxera disaster of 1888 viticulture restarted from 1895 with phylloxera-resistant American varieties. Grown are, among others, Riesling Italico, Creață, Muscat Ottonel and Silvaner.
