Climate, site & wine
Clay-loam and loess store water and give evenly ripened, round wines. Warmth puts fruit and body ahead of acidity.
Fetească Regală, Sauvignon Blanc and Tămâioasă Românească give fragrant, dry to off-dry whites, Merlot medium-bodied reds with plum fruit. Segarcea, about 29 km south of Craiova, is the historic centre of the podgorie. The estate was set up in 1884 as one of twelve Crown Domains and the only one given a viticultural purpose (today Domeniul Coroanei Segarcea).
