Climate, site & wine
Clay-limestone soils over limestone bedrock containing fossil oyster shells form the slopes; they ensure lime content and freshness. Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc bring botrytis for the sweet wines, and Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon also ripen on the slopes.
The sweet wines of Loupiac, Sainte-Croix-du-Mont and Cadillac are lighter and less dense than Sauternes, with honey, apricot and citrus. The reds of the Côtes de Bordeaux are juicy and Merlot-led, with soft tannin.

Plateaus and slopes above the right bank of the Garonne from Cadillac to Sainte-Croix-du-Mont, rising above the river plain and partly facing southwest. At Sainte-Croix-du-Mont the Tertiary fossil oyster bed is exposed; the village looks across to the Sauternes vineyards on the opposite bank.
