Niculițel, Tulcea, Măcin, Dăeni and Hârșova in the Măcin mountains at the Danube bend: viticulture since antiquity, weathered granite soils, Alira and Crama Sarica estates.
Climate, site & wine
Clay-loam, sand and loess make up the soils of the rolling hills; they drain well and encourage balanced root development. Dryness limits yields, and the wines are medium-bodied with clear fruit.
Fetească Regală, Aligoté, Fetească Albă and Sauvignon Blanc yield dry whites with citrus, apple and herbs. Aligoté contributes slender acidity, Sauvignon Blanc grass and citrus notes. Red varieties such as Băbească Neagră and Merlot add to the range.

Loamy soils give wines volume and a soft, velvety mouthfeel.

Loose sand and wind-blown sand warm up quickly and hold little water — they give aromatic, early-drinking wines with soft tannins; phylloxera-resistant.
CLIMATE · Cool continental
Dry continental climate in northern Dobruja with cold winters, warm summers and low rainfall. The proximity of the Danube, the Danube Delta and the Black Sea moderates temperature extremes.
TOPOGRAPHY · moderate
Hill country on the edge of the Măcin Mountains, one of Romania's oldest and most heavily eroded ranges, with sites around Niculițel, Tulcea, Măcin, Dăeni and Hârșova near the Danube. Vines grow on gentle to moderately steep slopes.
