Limestone amphitheatre at the Lump
Volkach Main loop: ripe, dense Silvaner and Riesling from the limestone rock of the Lump.
Climate, site & wine
The Lump's subsoil is Muschelkalk under a calcareous loam topsoil. The south-facing, sheltered bowl brings full ripeness, yet Silvaner and Riesling remain taut and mineral.
Around Nordheim and Sommerach loess and loam come in; here lighter Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau and Bacchus are made, often by the cooperatives of the wine villages. The Main forms a loop like this nowhere else along its course; the Escherndorfer Lump is a VDP site known for Silvaner.

The Volkach Main loop lies in the Main valley of Lower Franconia. The slopes on the inside of the loop are shielded from cold north winds; the climate is continental, with warm summers and cold winters.

The Escherndorfer Lump sits on the inside of the loop and opens like an amphitheatre to the south and southwest, with gradients of up to about 65 percent. Around Nordheim and Sommerach the sites are gentler.
