Climate, site & wine
Clayey Jurassic limestones with slope scree, marly and silty soils at the foot of slopes and clayey-siliceous soils in the far south define the wines. Chardonnay becomes ripe and round, with apple and peach fruit and, depending on site, a clear limestone imprint.
Pouilly-Fuissé and Saint-Véran bring more density and ageing potential than the simple Mâcon wines. Pinot Noir and Gamay play a small part alongside.

Loamy soils give wines volume and a soft, velvety mouthfeel.
Sandaromatic, approachable
Loose sand and wind-blown sand warm up quickly and hold little water — they give aromatic, early-drinking wines with soft tannins; phylloxera-resistant.
CLIMATE · Cool continental
Semi-continental, warmer and sunnier than the Côte d'Or, with warm summers and mild autumns. Hailstorms are a regular risk; late frost mainly affects lower sites.
TOPOGRAPHY · gentle
Six hill chains between Tournus and Mâcon, up to around 400 metres high; the rocks of Solutré and Vergisson near Pouilly-Fuissé reach about 500 metres. To the south the land merges into the Beaujolais.
