Warm and sunny, on the edge of the Palatinate Forest in one of the drier corners of the Pfalz. Nights are noticeably cooler than in the Mittelhaardt, which preserves acidity. Drought stress is possible in hot years.

Gently rolling hills and limestone plateaus around Grünstadt with the wine villages of Asselheim, Laumersheim and Bockenheim at the northern end of the German Wine Route. Vineyards lie on flat to moderately sloping ground at the transition from the Palatinate Forest to the Rhine plain.

Wine Character

The Leiningerland lies in the northeast of the Pfalz and includes Grünstadt with its districts Asselheim and Sausenheim, as well as villages such as Kirchheim, Laumersheim and Bockenheim. The historic landscape stretches about 20 kilometres from southwest to northeast and roughly 8 kilometres across. Elevation falls from almost 400 metres in the west to about 100 metres at the edge of the Rhine plain; the Eckbach and Eisbach drain to the Rhine.

The landscape lies in the transition from upland through the Rhine rift to the Rhine plain. The west is moister, the east milder and drier. Loess forms steep banks along sunken lanes; in the vineyards there are limestone, marl and loamy soils that store water in dry years. Cool nights preserve freshness and acidity.

Alongside Riesling, Burgundian varieties dominate: Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder, Chardonnay and Spätburgunder, plus Sauvignon Blanc. Philipp Kuhn in Laumersheim and Metzger in Grünstadt are among the well-known estates.
