Stuttgart

Stuttgart is one of the largest wine-producing cities in Germany. About 423 hectares of vineyards are spread over 16 of the 23 city districts, including Bad Cannstatt, Untertürkheim and Uhlbach, making up a good two percent of the city area. Some 500 holdings farm them, mostly part-time. Viticulture lies in the Neckar basin and on the slopes above it.

The Neckar valley lies in the rain shadow of the Black Forest, solar radiation is high, and the growing season of 230 to 240 days is the longest anywhere in Württemberg. The soils are predominantly Keuper marl and Schilfsandstein.

Red wine makes up about 71 percent of production. Trollinger was long in the lead; today Dornfelder, Lemberger, and Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are gaining ground. Among whites, Riesling leads Müller-Thurgau. Well-known sites are the Cannstatter Zuckerle, the Uhlbacher Götzenberg and the Untertürkheimer Mönchberg; all belong to the Weinsteige collective site. The Hofkammer Württemberg and Wöhrwag in Untertürkheim are among the estates.
