Climate, site & wine
Red Permian Rotliegend claystone, lying thinly over a limestone subsoil, stores warmth and is nutrient-poor. Riesling becomes dense and taut here, with stone fruit, herbs and a salty minerality.
The wines are generally dry, with plenty of drive and length; in warm years they carry substance without losing freshness. The combination of a southeast slope, light off the Rhine and shallow Rotliegend explains the reputation of Pettenthal, Hipping and Brudersberg.

Warm and dry: the Rhine provides reflected light and mild air, and the slopes facing southeast to south catch the sun early. Rheinhessen lies in the rain shadow of the Hunsrück and Taunus; late frosts are rare.
TOPOGRAPHY · steep
Narrow, steep slope on the Rhine between Nackenheim and Nierstein. From north to south the sites run Rothenberg, Pettenthal, Brudersberg, Hipping and Ölberg; Brudersberg reaches around 65 per cent gradient, and Hipping faces southeast.
