Climate, site & wine
Permeable, stony gravel and sand soils plus end-moraine material left by the Ice Age shape the vineyards. Müller-Thurgau is the leading variety and gives fresh, clear wines.
Spätburgunder follows as the second main variety, with Bacchus, Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder and Riesling also grown. In Nonnenhorn a winegrowing association farms vines; Kerner and Traminer are also grown.

Gravel / Sandlight, approachable
Gravel and sand drain heavily — vines struggle for water, wines turn fine, light and elegant.
Sandaromatic, approachable
Loose sand and wind-blown sand warm up quickly and hold little water — they give aromatic, early-drinking wines with soft tannins; phylloxera-resistant.
CLIMATE · Cool continental
Lake Constance stores heat, softens winter, protects against late spring frosts and extends the ripening phase in autumn.
TOPOGRAPHY · gentle
Moraine hills above the shore near Kressbronn, Nonnenhorn and Lindau; winegrowing at Kressbronn dates only from 1986. The Württemberg and Bavarian parts adjoin one another.
