The Würzburger Stein, at about 85 hectares, is a shell-shaped, south-facing slope on the Steinberg north of the city, with a gradient of 30 to 80 percent. Other wine villages such as Randersacker, Sommerhausen and Thüngersheim lie on the valley slopes of the Main; vineyards sit on Muschelkalk terraces and slopes with good sun exposure.

Wine Character

Würzburg and the Maindreieck form the centre of Franconian viticulture. The city on the Main is home to major estates such as Juliusspital, Bürgerspital, Staatlicher Hofkeller and Weingut am Stein, and winegrowing around Würzburg is documented since the early Middle Ages. The vineyards run along the slopes of the Main from the city to Randersacker, Sommerhausen and Thüngersheim, with the Würzburger Stein as the best-known site.

The Muschelkalk (shell limestone) is characteristic; in Randersacker (Pfülben, Marsberg, Sonnenstuhl) and at the Stein it occurs with loess cover and yields mineral, structured wines. The climate is continental and low in rainfall, with warm summers, cold winters and a risk of spring frost; the Main acts as a heat store for the slope sites.

Silvaner is the leading variety, alongside Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Weißburgunder, Spätburgunder and Scheurebe. The wines are traditionally vinified dry and are often bottled in the typical Bocksbeutel. Besides the large foundation estates, smaller producers such as Schmitt's Kinder, Störrlein & Krenig and Rudolf May shape the surrounding countryside.
